A Brief History About Establishing Alahly Club.

Thanks to the national association of Omar Almokhtar, specifically in late 1940s in city of Benghazi, Alahly football club has been established, and therefore we must review the history of those association and club.

Mr.Assad Ben Omran was the first one who came with the idea of establishing an association with the name of Omar Almokhtar during his presence in Egypt along with a group of Libyan youth whom been captured by the British army during the events of WWII, and that was in 1941. The king of Libya during that time king Idris Assonusi approved the idea and took it under his auspices, Mr.Mustafa Ben Amer also supported the idea of this association which was its main objective is providing help and entertainment for war prisoners in Libyan camps in Egypt.

After the liberation of Benghazi city in November 1942 from the Italian occupation a lot of young people has returned to their home. A three patriots young men which are, Ali fallaq, Mahmoud Makhlouf and Mahdi Almuterdi re-establish the association of Omar Almokhtar in Benghazi city and that was in  4th of April 1943, after getting the permission  from the British military authorities under the name of Omar Almokhtar Sport Association For Libyan Youth. And the purpose of creating such an association was organizing culturalistics, educational and athletic activities. And also providing the basic needs for the indigents.

The first administrative board of the association was in 1943, Khlil Elkwafi as chairman. Saad Algehani as general secretary.  Abdulhamid Aldebani, Khalil Algallal, Abduljaleel Alenizi, Hussain Kuairi, Mohamed Alkikhia, Hussain Bessikri, Mokhtar Osman, Yousef Langi, Renato chuba, representative of foreign community, and Salem Ben Amer as members. In December of 1944 Mr.Mustafa Ben Amer changed to be the chairman of the association after he was the head of the culture department, and Khalil Elkawafi as the vice manager, and Mr.Awad Alshebani as a general secretary. And in 1946 the board was re-organized again to the following :

Mr.Mustafa Ben Amer  as chairman, Khalil Elkwafi as vice manager,  Mohamed Bashir Almoghairbi as general secretary, Ali Belroween as treasurer, Ahmed Rafeeq Almehdewi, Khalil Algallal, Mahmoud Makhlouf, Ali Fallaq, Mahdi Almuterdi and Mohamed Alsabri as members. And the same board was re-elected 1948 and 1950, and after the resignation of Mr.Ali Fallaq Mr.Taher Almejressi took his place.

The Start Of Athletic activity in Benghazi and Establishing Alahly Football Club

In 1943 the sport section in the association was established and Mr.Mahdi Almuterdi was the head of this section, which contained The Libyan Football Federation, Mahdi Almuterdi, Mohamed Alsabri, Abdulaah Alsherif, Mohamed Albejo, Sulaiman Ben Omran, Mohamed Doma and Amhemed Alfaitouri. This federation organized the first football championship in 1943 until 1944.

Friday 27th August 1943, the association and its sport section issued the first sport journal under the name of Barqa Arriyadiyah which later became Alwatan Journal since the beginning of January of 1947, back again to the year of 1943 the association created Benghazi football team which had a lot of friendly games against the British army teams and the German prisoners and the team visited Tripoli in December of 1943 and the purpose of those visits was to acquaintance between the people of same country and manage the efforts and goals in a political aspect too.

In the year of 1944 the association of Omar Almokhtar purchased a land in Alberkah which back then named Cameo Minnelli. At that time in Cyrenaica , Libya the currency was the Egyptian pound and the purchase was done by borrowing 1100 EGP that piece of land was named Alhly Stadium, that was a suggestion by Mr.Mustafa Ben Amer,  in march 1945 witnessed the first game between Benghazi team and the team of British Army. And since then the stadium hosted football games. In 1947 the association decided to create a football team and the main objective was to attract the youth to join the association.

The sport department in the association created Alahly club in 1947 then created the scout team in October of the same year the idea came from the chairman Mr.Mustafa Ben Amer, after that Mr.Abulali Alagaili, the student of Alameer school and the player of the team, has been assigned to establish those teames, so he connected with his friends in the school and explained the idea we mention some of them, Mohamed Alhadad aka agaim, Moftah Alasfar and Saad Faraj. They were thrilled about the idea and they made contact with some players outside the school such as, Mustafa Makki, Salam Albarghathi, Mohamed Altarhoni, Mohamed Alsarawi aka Bejo, Mohamed Algaziri aka Washka, Abdulsalam Joaudda, Abdulhamid Almagrous and Abulnabi Alturki. And then Alhly football club played the first match against the German64 in 19th of April 1947 and lost by  3-1.

And before the beginning of the season of 1947-1948 Alahly team participated in many friendly matches. But the season was suspended and the association was stopped in December of 1947 by the royal decree of the prince Adris, to dissolve all the political organization, like Aljabha Albarqawiyah and the youth committee. And this decree was cancelled two months later after a pledge by the association that no political activities will be practice and only the athletic activities will be practice. And because of the big number of teams in championship and the war in Palestine, also because team of Jews community, Altaraji, which was the representative of the jews community in the city.  And since the association opened the doors of volunteerism to Jihad in Palestine and already sent the youth there.  The season was suspended to avoid any problems and only settled to a championship between the team of Benghazi and some German prisoners teams, German64 won the championship 1948-1949 and Alahly club was not one of the teams. Only the scout team of the association joined that championship and because of the many issues the association struggled with the British Military Administration during that time and the financial burdens and the leave of  German war prisoners and British soldiers, the association decided to disband Benghazi team and redistribute the players to the other teams in the champions according to their will. And a meeting was held to reorganize Alahly club and restart the activities.

Alahly Team Plays The First Official Match In their History , Benghazi Sport Season 1949-1950

After the decision of Alahly club recreation and the back of the team's activities, the team played their first official match against Alnahthah team in October 1949, and the final score was 7-0 for Alahly, Abulsalam Joaodda scored two goals, Mohmed Alhada also scored two goals, Saad Faraj and Hussain Herwees scored one goal each. The association and its sport committee decided to end the Benghazi team and redistribute the players to the other teams according to each player will and because of that some players joined Alahly team like,  Abdulmotaal Shatwan, Mohamed Joaodda and Ibraim Alfazany.

The resolution number 3 for organizing the associations and establishing Alahly Club in January . 1950. Which was to prevent the associations to practice any sport or cultural activities and criminalize any official logos or uniforms for those associations in article number 11. And also to ban the use of people's name whether they  were dead or alive as names to those associations in article number 20.

And by applying these new laws Omar Almokhtar association decided to separate its cultural, educational, social and athletic activities from their political activities. And a request to the government has been submitted to form a political organization under the name Aljameyah Alwataniyah  to replace the association, the minister of interiors immediately approved the request at the same time a request for registering Alhly athletic scout club has been submitted, but this request denied by the minster of interiors under the pretext that cultural section was already under supervision in the public school and the government also working on making a new resolution for the scout movement  and it will take care of the sport section. And after submitting more requests to the minister of interiors an approval has been issued under the condition of dropping the scout and cultural activities, after that a new request contains the needed adjustments submitted again, and then a license issued to establish Alahly Sport Club and Mr. Mohamed Almoghairbi elected to be the first director of the club, whom had to abandon his position as the general secretary of Aljameyah Alwataniyah so he can do his duties in his new position.  In 14th of February 1950 Alwatan journal issued no 215 of their journal which contained the news of establishing Alahly club, previously known as Omar Almokhtar association.

Alahly Club wins their first title in their history, Benghazi championship 1949-1950

After the establishing process, the club won the first title under the management of coach Salem Alwahaishi, without any loss and with total of 19 points ahead of Altalea club which had 14 points, and those are the names of the players during that season : Abulalli Alagaily, Salem Albarghathi, Mohamed Joaodda, Faraj Alhgazali, Ibrahim Alfazany, Saad Faraj, Ahmed Altharrat, Abulsalam Joaodda, Abdulmotael Shatwan, Mohamed Alhadad, Mustafa Makki, Hussain Herwais, Awad Hajal, Abdulhamid Almagrous, Mohamed Altarhoni and Mostafa Altrabelsi. After that season Alahly managed to win the next season with total of 9 points ahead of Altalea club with 8 points.

Dissolution of the association and Alahly club after winning the second title

The first setback and suspension of the club because of some problems among Omar Almokhtar association, the British authorities and government in July of 1951 which later lead to the dissolution of the association and the sport club and the stoppage of Alwatan journal and the confiscation of all assets and money of the association including the Headquarter and Alahly club stadium. The main reason was because of a protests by the youth of the association against the British military administration and the government, and ripping the British flag raised in front of the British colonial administrator house. Those protests was initially started because of unburied dead body of a Libyan citizen. In 9th of July 1951 the government held a meeting and the prime minister issued the following resolutions :

- permanently dissolve  Omar Almokhtar association.

- Dissolve of Alahly club.

- permanently dissolve Alwatan journal.

Alahly club and the absence of the athletic activities for two seasons

After the dissolution of Omar Almokhtar association and all its relevant organizations the activities of the club has been stopped for two whole seasons 1951 – 1952 and 1952-1953, in mid 1953 the club has returned to practice after the release of the prisoners. A lot of calls and connections has been made between the government and the club administration, their argue was that the club must return to participate in all the championship and competitions to enrich those competitions. Because without Alahly club and their supporters the championship was a huge failure.

The comeback of Alahly club

Driven by the fear of losing this club, as it happened to other clubs, and after several meeting held between Alahly club loyalist and players, a decision was made to form a committee includes four people to manage all affairs about the club. This committee was like a board of directors, which includes :- Abdulalli Alagaily , coach, Salem Albarghathi, the head of the team and the manager of financial business , Mohamed Jaoadda, for the administrative affairs, Mohamed Alhadad vice manager. After many years under this committee management a new licenses has been granted in 1957 one of them was for Alahly club exactly in 7th September 1957,second one for the same club, and by election a new board of directors was created : Saad Bogaigees as the head of the board, Mohamed Ahnaish as a vice manager, Taleb Alrewaiae as a general secretary, Ramadan Aldwaik as assistance and Mabrouk Albasyouni as a treasurer. Members : Abdulmawla Langi, Ahmed Alsousi, Rajab Ghonaim, Halim Mfrax, Mohamed Bozar, Ghaith Aubaid, Khailfa Almogasibi, Mustafa Albasyouni, Khalid Ben Hamid and Saeed Alabbar.

The club continued its usual activities until the year of 2000 when Qaddafi's regime demolished the headquarter of the club in Hai Alzaytoon district. And all the activities was stopped in 1st of September 2000, that was because of  protest by some supporters of the club in July 200 against the regime back then in Benghazi city. Those protest initially started after some problems between Alsaadi Alqaddafi, one of Qaddafi's sons, he was the president of the football  general federation. He was struggling so hard to obstruct the journey of Alahly club and marginalize the club, so the club dropped to the second league.
